About Us

Our
Story

The Hornby Festival is a 10-day annual, multi-genre festival known for its world-class performances. We are in our 40th year, attesting to our stability, sustainability.

The Festival is recognized as having not only local but provincial and national success. McLeans Magazine named the Hornby Festival as one of BC’s top 10 cultural events and Aeroplan Magazine put the Festival in the top five of Canadian festivals with the likes of the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Winnipeg Folk Festival.

The Society mandate is:

  • To involve this rural community in the ongoing creation of Canadian culture;

  • To promote and foster appreciation of and education in the arts through the presentation of cultural and artistic events;

  • To enrich the lives of all islanders and visitors by creating a greater awareness of the arts and culture;

  • To sponsor and promote workshops and/or demonstrations in the arts;

  • To assist, co-operate with and network with any organization, group or individual with similar aims;

  • To acquire and manage funds for the purposes of the Society.

The Artistic Vision is to continue to recreate a festival that is:

  • Unique in its diversity of multi-disciplinary/multi-genre programming

  • World-class in its presentation of high-calibre, genre leading artists

  • Cutting edge in its creative presentation of these artists

  • Sustaining in its organizational development and financial stability

  • Nurturing and responsive in its audience development and connection with its community

  • Supportive of artistic creation by offering an opportunity to artists to share and be compensated appropriately for their work.

Hornby Festival is a tremendous artistic and organizational success. Our box office revenues have shown huge growth over the past ten seasons. The Festival is debt free, and maintains a diverse funding base to support operations. Our organizational structure is well-defined with a good and supportive working relationship.
